Creative Business Card Exchange #bizx

UPDATE (02/09/2012): We’re extending the signup deadline by popular request. Lots of people are sesigning & ordering new business cards for the exchange. What a great idea! For now, it looks like we’ll start collecting cards from everyone in April. A hard deadline will be set soon. Check back for more updates.

What’s a Business Card Exchange?

Back in 2010, around this time of the year actually, I participated in a really cool event called a “Business Card Exchange”. It was hosted by one of my designer friends, Meredith Marsh, and I have wanted to host my own exchange ever since.

Well, as you might imagine, it is an organized exchange of business cards. One person decides to host the exchange and then a number of individuals all send a predetermined quantity of their own business cards into the host. Once all of the participants have mailed their cards in, the host then divides all of the cards into evenly divided stacks of cards. Each stack of cards consists of one copy of every card that was sent in. So, if 30 people participate, all 30 people get 30 unique cards in the mail! Fun, eh?

@meredithmarsh's #bizx FTW

A couple of months ago Meredith Marsh sent out a video blog that she would like to organize a business card exchange. I had heard of a couple people doing these before, but I had always missed the deadline since they fill up so quickly. I just happened to be on Twitter just as it came in so I joined in. Because, you know, I LOVE BUSINESS CARDS! ;) They are some of the best inspiration around and through my freelance work I design more than my fair share of them, so it is extremely handy to have some laying around.

Here’s Meredith’s original #bizx request:

I had just ordered some brand new cards for myself to give out at SxSWi2010, so I popped them in the mail and patiently waited for my package to arrive in the mail.

Finally, today….they came in! There are around 80 of them and I’m going to pick out my favorites over the next couple of days and post front/back images of them here. For now though, here’s a collage of all of them dumped onto my scanner. (That’s the best I could do, for now, from my recovery room.)

UPDATE:

Also, here’s another blog post about the #BIZX 2010 by Jeff Lin. And, here’s a Twitter list which includes most everyone from the group. There were a couple of cards without complete contact information on them. Tisk-tisk, try harder next time. ;P Read more
